This plant is probably the Purple
Coral Pea (Hardenbergia violacea). I say "probably" because Encyclopedia
Botannica states it "prefers an open, sunny position" but at
Western Cove it occurs mostly where shaded by trees. The plant is an
evergreen vine
with purple flowers which appear in spring. Encyclopedia Botannica
states: "The boiled leaves make a pleasant-tasting refreshing beverage." |
Native
Pigface (Carpobrotus Rossii) is a groundcover mostly 10 to 15
centimetres high
with succulent bluish/purple leaves, and
pink-purple flowers in spring and summer. At Western Cove Native
Pigface grows in sandy ground as single plants, small patches, and
sometimes in larger patches covering up to 30 square metres. |
Different species of Iris are native to different countries in Asia, Europe and North America. At Western Cove these flowers grow on both sides of the Esplanade |
Cape Weed (Arctotheca) also
called "Dandelion" has yellow daisy-like flowers and grows to a height
of 20 centimetres. |
According to a local resident these flowers are called
Diamatheca, the purple and white being separate varieties. |
This white flower, half a metre tall, grows along
roadsides at Western Cove. Possibly it's a species of Stackhousia
although as a non-botanist I'm guessing. |
The five photos below are of flowers seen at Western Cove
which I have not yet identified. |
