HENRY CHENOWETH 1847 - 1927
Henry
Chenoweth was born in Liskeard, Cornwall and came to Australia as a
young man. He lived for a time on Kangaroo Island and married Emma
Steen
Bates at the residence of Mr Dicks Glynburn, near Delamere on 27th
March 1871.
Daughters,
Ellen Florina Jane was born on 15 October 1872 at Hog Bay, Louisa
Ethel born 18th January 1877 on Le Fevre Peninsular, Adelaide
Anne was born at Glanville near Largs Bay on 21 February 1879.
Sons,
Henry Alfred John born at Brownlow, 5 November 1883, Charles Sydney at
Smiths Bay, 24 September 1885 and Leonard born at Cygnet River, 18
November 1888.
Henry
Alfred attended the Wisanger School but died of heatstroke at Brownlow
when he was 14 years of age. Louisa and Adelaide died as infants at Hog
Bay and are buried there.
Henry
purchased land in the Hundred of Menzies section 122, in 1882 section
112, May 1890.
He later
lived at the Bight of the Bay on a property given to his wife by her
father Ephraim Steen Bates. Henry inherited the land from his wife and
continued there for a few years. The remains of the ruin are still
evident on the Esplanade at Western Cove, also the pits that were dug
there to make use of the ground water which was abundant in the area
and used to water the stock.
Emma
died there on 12/4/1901, and her father at the age of eighty rode from
Penneshaw at the news of her death.
Henry
Chenoweth died 13/1/1927 and was buried at Fullarton, South Australia
at the age of eighty. His children Ellen, Sydney and Leonard all
married; they lived in the Minlaton – Curramulka area.
