CENTIPEDES at WESTERN COVE

The pictured centipede was about 12 centmetres in length and might belong to the species known as the "giant centipede" but that's uncertain. It is common at Western Cove and likely to be encountered when looking under stones or logs in moist and soft soil. This one entered my residence and was taken outside, photographed, and sent on his way.

Australia has about 140 identified species of centipedes. They have one pair of legs per segment compared to millipedes which have two pairs per segment. The giant centipede is a solitary, fast-moving predator and eats insects.

Their bite is painful and recovery might take a day or two but apparently no one in Australia had died from it.
