Kangaroo Island is having a positive influence in Uganda through the efforts of Louise Davis.

As Director of the Living Gift Ministries she is raising $10,000 to help a church in Uganda purchase a 6-acre property including several buildings that require renovation where it will run an orphanage and a school.

The location is west of Lake Victoria near Uganda's border with Tanzania.

Louise is a pastor with a Certificate in Christian Ministry and currently studying for a Diploma in Christian Leadership. In 2013 she went to Indonesia with the National Alpha Team to train pastors in church leadership.

She has also been to Africa four times in the past two years — to Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania — conducting leadership seminars for pastors, teaching and preaching in churches, schools and prisons, and encouraging pastors in remote villages.

Living Gift Ministries is currently raising funds for the orphanage and school by planting trees on KI in a revegetation project of the Natural Resource Management Board which pays 85 cents per tree planted.

Louise arrived on KI as a 6-year-old when her parents began farming near the small town of Parndana, and she attended school there. As a family they were heavily involved in the community, interested in sports, and attended the local Anglican Church.

She later became a registered nurse and midwife, working for 15 years on the mainland and on KI following her marriage.

Pastor Louise lives near Kingscote but was interviewed for this story when visiting Western Cove.

Her next trip to Africa is already scheduled.
